Expert Formulators, Welcome to Skin Actives

At Skin Actives our approach to skin care is to pay attention not to fragrance or color but to the ingredients that could benefit your skin. For this, we search thousands of articles in the scientific literature looking for actives. We prefer actives whose biochemical mechanisms of action are understood, but also accept botanical extracts known to benefit the skin, even if the research into mechanisms of action is just beginning.

We also use the scientific literature to decide on the concentrations to use in our pre-mixed products. This is why many of our pre-mixed products have different colors or textures to what you might be used to see in the department store – our products actives at the “right” concentration. For example, too much copper can promote protein degradation (rather than synthesis). This approach seems to work nicely, as shown by the effectiveness of the products we sell.

For you, dear DIY experts, I will provide references and resources that will help you make the best out of the products we offer at Skin Actives. We will keep adding more resources and references to this page, including textbooks on biochemistry, phytochemistry and more. Remember to look to the forum for ideas and tips, and please write to me if there are topics you would like to see discussed.

Good luck with your formulations and creations!
